LEHI, Utah, Aug. 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The 1 Million is a Utah start-up that wants to bring about big change by fusing micro-donations with a subscription business model. Launching in Utah this month and nationally on Sept. 1, the company wants to bring 1 million people together, giving $1 each month to deserving nonprofits.
Co-founder, Caitlyn Brooksby, MPA, said the idea came after realizing she had not given back the way she wanted to in her 20s. "I've committed the last decade, in its entirety, to chasing what I deemed as success," Brooksby says. "In February of this year, I realized that I was on that path. I had worked for a Fortune 500 company, earned a master's degree, stayed out of debt, and found a clear career path; but what had I given?"
After winning 'App Day', a competition where a working prototype is built in 24-hours and sponsored by Sahara Dev., the 3rd largest software development firm in Utah, the founders of The 1 Million began revving up for launch.
Keeping the business model simple was always the goal, says Brooksby. Each month, members of The 1 Million place a vote for which nonprofit they would like to receive a donation.
"We feel that people generally want to do good. By making this platform as simple as signing up once and voting once every month we enable, those who want to, to do good with little to no effort," Brooksby said.
The company vets the nonprofits before they reach the platform. Keeping the cost of operations as low as possible has been a critical aspect of the business. By doing so, it allows the full $1 donation to go to each month's winning nonprofit.
According to Millennial Impact Reports, more than half of the millennials surveyed said they would be interested in making monthly donations to a nonprofit. Brooksby says the research showed that millennials wanted to give. They wanted transparency; they cared about causes and wanted to be connected to them; they expected nonprofits to operate best in class.
"We hope people realize that big change can happen by one person at a time and we are out to prove that," Brooksby said.
