WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., June 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- In Florida, seven people are dying each day.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, this is just a fraction of the 20,000 people each year that die due to prescription drug overdoses. Over the last decade, the number of such deaths has more than tripled, and Florida's southern coast is ground zero.

Local West Palm Beach news quotes neighbors as saying that "zombie-like" patients often line up outside the clinics in the mornings, waiting for them to open. This pandemic of over-prescribed medicinal drugs by clinical doctors has been dubbed "Pill Mills" and has caught the attention of locals, lawyers, and lawmakers alike.

Attorney David Spicer, along with Attorney Stephen K. Miller, has put the efforts of himself and the Law Offices of Spicer and Miller behind countering the "Pill Mills" surge. Spicer previously represented the parents of 21-year-old Anthony Lauzerique who died of a drug overdose and another 22-year-old, Jason Fusco, who also died of a drug overdose. Both cases settled. The Lauzerique case also resulted in a Board of Medicine prosecution against the doctor involved. Spicer and Miller have a third case involving the death of another father who left two young children. The "Pill Mill" doctors do not seem to be overly concerned about criminal convictions but civil lawsuits, especially those where punitive damages are involved, get their attention. Medical malpractice lawsuits are also, by law, monitored by the Florida Board of Medicine and often trigger investigations that might never have started otherwise.

This Father's Day, on Sunday, June 19, WBZT 1230 AM is hosting a new one-hour radio talk program, "Doctor's Prescriptions, Deadly Addictions." This special program is intended to spread awareness of the "Pill Mills," and to help educate listeners with information and opportunities. The program will begin at (8 p.m. on Sunday 6/19), and feature Attorney David Spicer.

"I just think that criminal conviction is going to be much tougher to get than a Board of Medicine discipline on a doctor," said Spicer. "(Criminal Convictions) sound good, but what are they going to do?" Spicer explains that these criminal convictions are extremely difficult and can take time.
