Leadership Charter School Thunderbird Preparatory Academy Successfully Launches in North Carolina

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- THUNDERBIRD PREPARATORY ACADEMY, North Carolina's newest leadership charter school, had a successful opening day, incorporating three temporary school sites within close proximity of each other.  Construction at the school's main campus was scheduled to be completed on opening day, but a series of unanticipated delays required the school leadership to enact contingency plans that involved temporarily relocating the school.  The school's Managing Director, Patty Moreira, commented,  "…most newly formed charters are generally paralyzed by these types of delays and often don't have the funding resources or even the expertise readily available to manage through these types of issues.  As a leadership school, we were proactive and prepared for multiple outcomes from the onset. It's safe to say that our opening was never at issue. We have a great team of teachers and staff, a strong school board, and very supportive parents that are all working toward a common goal. Thunderbird Preparatory Academy's charter application was approved by the state of NC in August 2013, to launch as a K-4 school, serving up to 488 students and adding one grade per year through twelfth grade. The school will follow a Core Knowledge LA and a Singapore Math curriculum anchored by Covey's, "Leader In Me," strengths based leadership training.
