Leading Japanese Garbage Truck Producer Designs Maxwell Technologies' Ultracapacitors Into All-Electric Loading Mechanism
Innovative Design Eliminates Fuel Consumption, CO2 Emissions and Noise
SAN DIEGO, April 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Maxwell Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: MXWL) announced today that ShinMaywa Industries, Ltd., a leading Japanese producer of special purpose trucks, has designed Maxwell's BOOSTCAP® ultracapacitors into an all-electric loading mechanism for garbage trucks that eliminates fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and noise during loading and unloading.
Each truck's loading mechanism incorporates seven 48-volt BOOSTCAP ultracapacitor modules that charge from the energy regeneration brake, and store enough energy to power all-electric loading and unloading with the truck in an engine-off mode.
According to ShinMaywa's Energy Regeneration Project Research & Development Management Division, "Ultracapacitors enable our trucks to respond to public demand for more environmentally friendly, noiseless garbage collection. We estimate that electric loading reduces diesel fuel consumption by approximately 2,400 liters and CO2 emissions by up to 6.4 tons per year compared with conventional garbage trucks that use the internal combustion engine to provide power for loading and unloading."
"This is another example of ultracapacitors' efficiency and versatility in enabling cost-effective, environmentally compatible solutions for applications in industries as diverse as transportation, renewable energy, consumer and industrial electronics and information technology," said David Schramm, Maxwell's president and chief executive officer.
