League of Black Women to Open 8th Annual Global Leadership Conference with Groundbreaking Report on Risk
TAMPA, Fla., May 16, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The League of Black Women will open its global leadership conference, "Black Women 2011: New World Power," with a groundbreaking new report on how Black women experience risk in pursuit of leadership ambition, at the Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club.
"Risk and Reward: Black Women Leading Out on a Limb" provides an overview of key findings from the LBW's national Risk and Reward Survey developed with a team of researchers at DePaul University.
"Black women are self-motivated to take risks, but they aren't encouraged to take risks at work and lack reward and sponsorship support when they do," said Sandra Finley, LBW President and CEO. "This report holds valuable insights and recommendations about how Black women should select and evaluate their most trusted advisors and assess the risk in opportunity."
Finley will discuss the findings and answer media questions during a conference call on Tuesday at noon (eastern). To participate, please RSVP at [email protected] to receive an embargoed copy of the report and conference dial-in information. The report will be available online later Tuesday at www.leagueofblackwomen.org.
About 150 high-ranking professional Black women are expected to attend the conference from all over the world. Presenters will include Sheila Johnson, CEO, Salamander Hospitality LLC; Marilyn Johnson, VP of Market Development, IBM; Valerie Amos, U.N. Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator; Tjada McKinley, Senior Advisor and Director of the Feed the Future private sector initiative at USAID; and Ertharin Cousin, U.S. Representative to the U.N. Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome.
For the first time ever, select conference sessions will be live streamed to participating historically Black colleges and universities. There will be college students attending in real time, learning and hoping to meet the senior professional women who may serve as their future sponsors in the business world.
The annual Black Rose Award will be presented Thursday evening to Antoinette Leatherberry, Principal, Deloitte, for using the sponsorship power of her position to increase opportunities and elevate women of color.
Conference sponsors included American Airlines; Booz Allen Hamilton; Deloitte; U.S. Cellular; Southern Company; The Walt Disney Company; CNA; Progress Energy; TIAA CREF; Federally Employed Women; Kraft Foods; and Jones magazine.
