Ellis, Jr. has received the 2015 Distinguished Graduate Award from the Naval Academy Alumni Association. The award acknowledges recipient's demonstrated and unselfish commitment to a lifetime of service, their personal character and the significant contributions they have made as leaders in the community.

Ellis retired with the rank of Admiral from the U.S. Navy after 35 years of service and has been a member of the Level 3 Board of Directors since March 2005. Since November 2013, he has served as an Annenberg Distinguished Visiting Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. From May 2005 to May 2012, Ellis was president and chief executive officer of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, an independent non-profit whose mission is to promote the highest levels of safety, reliability and excellence in the operation of nuclear-electric generating plants. He served as a presidential appointee on the President's Intelligence Advisory Board and the Military Advisory Panel to the Iraq Study Group.
