Life Extension Foundation® study finds Cognitex® with NeuroProtection Complex may provide a positive impact on cognitive performance

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Life Extension Foundation of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., a pioneer in funding and reporting the latest anti-aging research and integrative health therapies, has announced positive results from its study to assess the effectiveness of the dietary supplement, Cognitex® with NeuroProtection Complex, in improving cognitive performance in middle-aged to elderly subjects with subjective memory complaints.

The study, conducted at Life Extension Clinical Research, Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., assessed the change in cognitive performance from baseline to day 30 and day 60, based on taking the online cognitive assessment tool, computerized neuropsychological test, results from a CGI-I (Clinical Global Impression Improvement) scale and an assessment survey for consumer attitude.

Forty middle-aged to elderly subjects were enrolled and dosed with three capsules per day of the dietary supplement.  Cognitive evaluations were conducted at various time points.  The results yielded a  score measuring different cognitive capabilities.   The CGI-I scale provided an overall clinically determined summary measure.

Twenty-nine subjects completed the study with no significant adverse events being reported. Preliminary results revealed a statistically significant improvement in three tests. Working Memory-N-Back displayed the most significant improvement (p<0.0001), as well as inspection time and executive function (p<0.05).  Based on the CGI-I Scale, improvement was noted after 30 days and 60 days of product dosing.

Working Memory-N-Back is a cognitive function that allows individuals to hold information in their mind for brief periods of time, typically only a few seconds.  For example, when responding to a question, that question is maintained in working memory as a response is formed. Another example is when looking up a phone number working memory is utilized to store it until you have completed phoning.  Inspection time is the speed of intake of information and checks for the ability to quickly detect the identity of a stimulus.  For example, when driving a car and you could take in information such as a pedestrian in the crosswalk or another vehicle in your path even a split-second faster would be beneficial.  Executive function is a vital function which allows us to navigate the challenges that life presents on a daily basis such as planning, problem-solving, abstract thinking, troubleshooting and regulation of emotion.
