Link between Tooth Loss and Slowing Mind and Body And the Emphasis on Oral Health
HAWTHORNE, Calif., Jan. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Hawthorne dentist, Dr. Yashari, offers comprehensive dental care that can help preserve natural teeth. A recent study found that tooth loss can speed memory and functional decline. More than 3,000 adults over the age of 60 from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing were evaluated. Researchers found that those who had no natural teeth remaining had a 10 percent decline in walking speed and memory tests.
Losing teeth is a common problem. About 50 percent of people over 35 have lost a permanent tooth, and as people age, the incidence of tooth loss becomes even more common. The study, which was published in the "Journal of the American Geriatrics Society," adjusted for various socioeconomic factors, including existing health problems, smoking, depression, and biomarkers and found that even after adjusting for many variables, those who had lost teeth still experienced a slowdown in their mental and physical function.
Previous studies have found that tooth loss is linked to an increased risk of clinical dementia and Alzheimer's disease. This new study underscores the importance of identifying those at higher risk of increased functional declines. Although tooth loss is not the only cause of mental and physical slowing, it is one that is highly preventable.
Tooth loss does not have to occur with age. In fact, teeth are designed to last a lifetime. With good dental care, patients can safeguard their smiles and access the care they need to protect their long-term dental, mental, and physical health. Available treatments include dental implants, orthodontic treatments, oral surgery, sleep apnea treatments, family dentistry, and treatments for TMJ disorders.
