Additionally, Iran's CERT team has revealed that 43 tested antivirus (AV) solutions failed to prevent the attack. The Flame attack is now notorious for exposing the failure of AV companies as evident by a recent open letter from Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer of F-Secure. In his letter on failing to detect Flame, Hypponen writes, "What this means is that all of us had missed detecting this malware for two years, or more. That's a spectacular failure for our company and for the antivirus industry in general."

During an eight-month period that began in Autumn 2011 and stretched into Spring 2012, a Bit9 customer was consistently attacked by the Flame malware.
