The global structured cabling market is expected to continue to grow from $6 billion in 2012 to $8.3 billion in 2020. A CAGR of 4%. Cabling in data centres accounts for $1.1billion in 2012 or 19% and is expected to grow to $1.6 billion in 2020, still accounting for 19% of the total market. Cabling in LAN is expected to grow from $4.9million to 6.7 million in 2020. The number of outlets per desk and number of workstations will decline, but growth in emerging markets as well as the use of Ethernet networks to connect and even power other devices (access points, cameras, access controls, BMC etc.) will have a positive impact on the market. However most cabling installed in LAN and converged projects will be sold with price as the key factor and value added sales will be increasingly difficult. Data Centres: The increasing use of smart phones, tablets and laptops and the need for file sharing, networking and instant access will massively increase the need for data storage and speed. The need for storage will increase the demand for more data centre capacity.

Business will increasingly shift from buying IT products to purchasing infra- structure as a service, and software as a service as the overall costs are (perceived) to be lower. The end-user wants flexibility and scalability. The trends seen in the last few years towards increasing use of fibre in data centres will continue. The number of computer rooms and small and medium sized data centres will fall as the use of cloud services and outsourcing increases. Mega data centres are moving towards singlemode fibre, while large data centres are using multimode fibre and MPOs.

LAN: Cabling in LAN accounts for just over 80% of the cabling installed. The use of fibre in LAN will continue to be limited primarily to the backbone and for campus applications. Copper products will mainly be found in LAN applications. LAN cabling is a commodity product and the majority of products are sold mainly on price. The increasing use of cabling for wiring of other devices such as access controls, IP cameras, BMS etc. will further enforce the commodity aspect. Economic growth and new construction are key factors when forecasting the market for structured cabling in LAN.
The emerging markets are expected to grow by 5 – 6% per year and new construction by 10 – 11%. Economic growth and new construction will only show modest growth in the mature markets (North America, Western Europe, Australia, Japan and South Korea). An increasing number of staff will be not have a fixed desk but will use smart phones, tablets and cloud facilities. The number of permanent wired work stations will continue to fall as will the number of outlets per desk.

WI-Fi: The increasing use of Internet devices and mobility is putting pressure on networks. Mobile networks can't cope with the increase in traffic so much of the data is offloaded onto Wi-Fi networks. Other wireless systems are DAS (Distributed Antenna Systems), mainly used in large buildings and small cells, both technologies are growing. The number of WLAN access points shipped has doubled in 5 years to 5 – 6 million Access Points and the market is currently dominated by 802.11n products. New products compliant with the 802.11ac technology are being launched. The new technology provides much higher speeds, is more robust and can support more users. Significant growth in Wi-Fi traffic is expected. Small cell and carrier Wi-Fi deployment are expected to carry more than 60% of mobile data traffic by 2020.

Convergence: Convergence will increase and more structured cabling will be used to wire IP cameras, BMS, access controls, etc. Most converged buildings are new build or complete retrofit. A large part of the world's construction is taking place in China where the uptake of convergence is low but increasing. A driver for convergence is data collected from sensors, meters and monitors, which when analysed can provide vital strategic input. A potentially key driver for growth in the structured cabling market is PoE, but the changes will take time due to the conservative nature of the construction industry. The use of PoE would increase the number of outlets to the desk and in the ceiling. Cabling would typically be Cat 5e or Cat 6 and low cost cabling as there are no bandwidth issues. LED IP lighting and Passive optical LAN are other technologies included in this Hot Topic with some impact on the market long term.
