Louisiana's Stop-Sale System Achieves Significant Quarterly Results In Battle Against Meth
Electronic Technology Blocks Illegal Sales, Allows Legal Ones
LUTHERVILLE, Md., April 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) – a nonprofit organization that facilitates cooperation between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, state regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the prevention and investigation of drug diversion – today lauded the latest quarterly results achieved by the real-time, stop-sale system in Louisiana. First quarter data released by the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) shows electronic technology in the Louisiana State blocked the sale of more than 8,000 boxes of medicines containing pseudoephedrine (PSE) preventing more than 20,000 grams from potentially being diverted by meth criminals.
"Louisiana's real-time, stop-sale system continues to provide officials in the state with an invaluable resource in the battle against meth production and use," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI). "NPLEx allows retailers to block unlawful sales of safe and effective medicines containing pseudoephedrine in real time and provides law enforcement officials with criminal data up to the minute. And because NPLEx targets meth criminals, it protects responsible consumers' access to the cold and allergy medicines they depend on for relief. Based on the latest block numbers, there's no doubt that NPLEx is doing exactly what it's supposed to in Louisiana."
