Lunarline, Inc. Supports New FCC Website to Advance Open Government Policy and Open Source Security

ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Lunarline, Inc., in a collaborative effort with MetroStar Systems, redesigned the new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website. Launched in April 2011, the website is centered on increased interaction with the public through the usage of social media in compliance with the President's Open Government Initiative.

Lunarline contributed to the project by developing security standards and security engineering support for the site. As part of the new design, a cloud-based environment was developed for the FCC website. The website content and applications were placed in the cloud to increase digital citizen interaction and participation with the FCC.

"The FCC uses an accredited cloud provider and developed security lock-down guides for open source components.  This ensures each component meets strict federal and DoD security configuration standards and is a great way of using new cutting edge technologies without adding undue risk," said Waylon Krush, CEO of Lunarline. FCC's risk based approach to open-source should be the model for the rest of government to follow – especially as budgets are trimmed and agencies are asked to do more with less."

To enhance the cloud-based features of the website, Lunarline evaluated cloud environments and components for FISMA requirements and enhanced the security of in-cloud applications, operating system (OS), and other components. They also developed a Security Authorization Package for the cloud system. Additionally, Lunarline developed security standards for the open source technology and conducted security configuration, testing, and validation for all of the components. Cyber security support was also provided for security engineering and security fixes with OS, applications, databases and software code.
