Made In USA Furniture: Eco-Friendly Home Furniture from the Kristin Drohan Collection Debuts in Merchandise Marts in Chicago and Atlanta
ATLANTA, Sept. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlanta-based Interior Designer Kristin Drohan is launching several new pieces to her personal signature collection this fall in both her Atlanta and Chicago showrooms. The eco-friendly classically inspired upholstery pieces can be seen in both the Traditional and Modern Design Atelier Showrooms in the Merchandise Mart and by appointment in the Atlanta showroom. To see the collection online, go to http://www.kristindrohancollection.com/.
Drohan created the line based in part on custom designs developed for clients to fill what she saw as a missing niche in the market -- namely durable, high classic, high style upholstered pieces that are also eco-friendly and comfortable.
"Many manufactures tout eco-friendly furnishings that offer contemporary or casual styling, but without the performance or style needed by today's primarily traditional sophisticated families. Finding limited resources for furniture that met these criteria, I began designing individual pieces for my clients and now for my own line," she said.
All pieces in the Kristin Drohan Collection are bench-made in Hickory, North Carolina. All materials and manufacturing processes are geared toward creating eco-friendly home furniture that is made in the USA.
"Our new reclamation frame option uses reclaimed wood, salvaged from many of the vacant factories and buildings in North Carolina. The spring coiled cushions contain a bio-hybrid soy-based cushion, and the fabrics are eco-friendly and high performing," she said. "You know the history of the frame of the product. You know where it came from, whether it is a manufacturing center, a train station, or an old building. It becomes a one-of-a-kind piece of home furniture that is very personal."
Included in the new grouping are a recliner, sofa, convertible sectional, ottomans, two upholstered beds and a canopy bed.
Drohan is committed to Made In America furniture.
"Made in America furniture is a much more eco friendly option because you aren't paying for transportation costs of shipping something coming across the ocean. We have better quality and control. If we can be more sustainable with our own economy that helps us as a country," she said. "It supports our economy and creates jobs."
Many manufacturers touting "Green" furnishings have a contemporary or casual style that doesn't fit the performance or style needs of many sophisticated active families. Kristin's clients were demanding stylish, durable, comfortable, and healthy furniture. Finding limited resources meeting those criteria prompted her to design and fabricate her own line.
"Many people want to know how to be eco-friendly and my home furniture fits their needs," she said.
Each piece has a specific function, inspired by a classic timeless frame, and designed for comfort and durability. The manufacturing process is designed to be environmentally friendly and healthy to the consumer. The kiln-dried hardwood frames come from certified American forests that adhere to strict conservation guidelines. The spring coil cushions are bio hybrids utilizing soy, corn, and recycled cotton.
