SEOUL, South Korea and CUPERTINO, Calif., July 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- MagnaChip Semiconductor Corporation ("MagnaChip") (NYSE: MX), a Korea-based designer and manufacturer of analog and mixed-signal semiconductor products, announced today that it has started the co-development of an automotive MCU process with ABOV Semiconductor, Automotive Electronic Systems and Semiconductors Lab. of UNIST (Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology) and Analog & Mixed Signal Integrated Circuit Lab. of SNU (Seoul National University) using MagnaChip's 0.18 micron automotive process.

MagnaChip plans to develop MCU products with ABOV, a fabless semiconductor company specializing in MCU products, using MagnaChip's 0.18 micron automotive process. The launch of this co-development project with ABOV will strengthen and expand MagnaChip's position in the automotive MCU market. Using MagnaChip's 0.18 micron automotive process, MagnaChip and ABOV plan to jointly develop IP and MCU products qualified under condition AEC Q100 Grade 0.

For this development project, MagnaChip will be providing the 0.18 micron automotive process and the design library including EEPROM & SRAM IP, Analog IP, Standard cell library and I/O library. Jointly, ABOV will design the microcontroller and UNIST will provide the LIN/CAN communication IP while SNU will offer sensor interface circuits by using MagnaChip's 0.18 micron automotive process design kit. The development schedule is to complete IP & product evaluation and to finish set level verification by the end of 2015.

MagnaChip's existing portfolio includes 1.8V/3.3V CMOS, 52V LDMOS/EDMOS, fully isolated 32V nLDMOS and diverse analog IP such as ADC, DAC, LDO, OSC and POR. Under the AEC-Q004 Zero Defect Guideline MagnaChip has also offered embedded EEPROM with ECC and plans to build a complete automotive process portfolio such as 1.8V/5.0V CMOS, BCD 80V and SOI 100V in an effort to meet all of the customer's needs.

ABOV intends to jointly develop and integrate with MagnaChip a suite of automotive peripherals for their microcontrollers including applications such as sensor readout circuits, LED drivers for headlights and tail lights and motor drivers for electric chairs.

YJ Kim, MagnaChip's Chief Executive Officer stated, "We are very pleased to be jointly developing automotive qualified microcontrollers with ABOV. This is another example of our continued effort to expand our specialty technology portfolio for the automotive and other growing markets. MagnaChip and ABOV are committed to continue to develop this strategic partnership and to expand both companies' effort in the automotive market."
