Clinic for infertility treatment Prague Fertility Centre in Prague (PFC), the first in the Czech Republic, introduces from the beginning of November 2014 a break-through method based on the functional selection of DNA-damaged sperm. Magnetic-Activated Cell Sorting (MACS) utilizes the magnetic labeling of defective sperm that are subsequently trapped in a magnetic field. At first sight, it is impossible to evaluate the DNA quality of the sperm, which is a very important aspect for fertilization, embryo viability and pregnancy maintenance. Damage of the sperm DNA (i.e. fragmentation) may also be the cause of male infertility, undetectable by standard methods, such as determining the sperm concentration, morphology assessment, or motility tests.
The quality of sperm deteriorates as men age and male fertility is declining. Some studies have shown a significant increase in sperm DNA damage in men over 35. It has been found that their sperm damage can be three times higher compared with younger men. "It should be noted that sperm with damaged DNA still have the ability to fertilize an egg. This factor, along with older paternal age, can have a major impact not just on the men's fertility, but also on the viability of embryos and the subsequent health of the offspring. Therefore, a possible higher rate of spontaneous abortion or birth defects can occur," says embryologist, head of the IVF laboratory and CEO, Daniel Hlinka MVD, PhD.
