MainStreet America Turns Into #PinkStreet
SPRING, Texas, Sept. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- MainStreet America will be showing its support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by painting its 44,000-square-foot building pink. October will launch MainStreet America's #PinkStreet campaign, which will extend throughout the month.
On Sept. 29, CertaPro of Houston arrived with eight crews armed with scaffolding, paint sprayers, and 50 gallons of paint donated by PPG. They worked throughout the day and night to complete a project of massive proportion that will leave a lasting impression on the City of Houston.
At the start of October, inside of the Business Center, there will be an eight-foot #PinkStreet Honor Wall where pink ribbons can be attached in honor of those who are fighting breast cancer or have fallen to the disease. The general public is invited to come make a donation to the breast cancer awareness effort and post a ribbon on the #PinkStreet Honor Wall.
"This will create a lot of awareness to the public and hopefully will inspire women to practice early detection through mammograms and self-exams," said Barbara Feigin, co-owner of MainStreet America and a breast cancer survivor.
Feigin was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma breast cancer in November 2013 after a routine mammogram was ordered by her doctor. She had no history of breast cancer in her family and did not consider herself at risk of the disease. She underwent surgery and several weeks of radiation.
"I realized how lucky I was to have great medical care and to detect my cancer so early," she said. "Even though my cancer was aggressive, the tumor was small and I was able to avoid chemotherapy."
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, and it is Feigin's hope that her story of early detection will inspire other women to take the same measures in order to protect themselves and decrease the number of deaths caused by this terrible disease.
The #PinkStreet campaign will include numerous events to promote awareness using the pink building as a platform. Individuals are encouraged to take a selfie in a designated spot of the pink-painted MainStreet America building's parking lot and post the photo to social media sites with the hashtag #PinkStreet. For each selfie taken and posted on social media, MainStreet America will donate $1 for breast cancer awareness.
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there will be a Pink Out Weekend on Oct. 18 and 19, which will provide free admission to the MainStreet America Park for anyone who arrives wearing pink. There will be #PinkStreet T-shirts for sale. The Pink Out Weekend event will also coincide with the Oct. 18 Santa Market, where four of the Park's showcase homes will be fully decorated in holiday fashion. The MainStreet Furniture & Accessories store will also have its #PinkStreet Tag Sale.
From Oct. 1 to 30, there will be a silent auction held with bidding continuing throughout the month. At the end of the month, the highest bidder on each item wins, and those proceeds will also go toward breast cancer awareness and research.
A portion of all sales proceeds raised through the #PinkStreet campaign will go toward breast cancer awareness and research.
