Major General Patrick Henry Brady (US ARMY Ret.) To Receive 2018 Annual Outstanding Aviator Award
NEW YORK, March 12, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Wings Club Foundation, Inc. and IAWA (International Aviation Women's Association) will honor Distinguished Service Cross and Medal of Honor recipient, Major General Patrick Henry Brady (US ARMY Ret.) with the 2018 annual Outstanding Aviator Award. The presentation of this year's Award will take place during The Wings Club Foundation's Annual Meeting, to be held on the evening of Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at The Yale Club in New York City.
Major General Patrick Henry Brady (US ARMY Ret.) joined the army in 1959 and volunteered for service in Vietnam right out of flight school in January 1964. His work there was exclusively in helicopter evacuation, known in the field as "dust off."
He had the reputation as one of the most skilled and gutsy pilots in Vietnam whose extraordinary flying techniques enabled him to navigate through conditions other pilots would not attempt. Both his skill and guts were put to the test on a foggy day in January, 1968, during his second tour of duty as part of the 54th Medical detachment in Chu Lai.
After seven unsuccessful attempts to rescue wounded soldiers from a fog shrouded evacuation site, he volunteered for his first mission of the day – a day that would end with Major General Brady flying four separate sets of missions under what seemed impossible conditions. He went through three different helicopters, riddled with four hundred bullet holes and evacuated 51 men to safety.
In recognition for his act of valor, Major General Brady was awarded the Medal of Honor which was presented to him on October 9, 1969 by President Richard Nixon. His most significant aviation accomplishments were over 2,500 combat missions and 5,000 rescues. He retired from the US Army as major general in 1993 after 34 years of service.
