Making the Most of Financial Education Month: SAVE AND INVEST PA!
HARRISBURG, Pa., April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Spring fever and Financial Education Month go hand in hand. And, while some students may be daydreaming of anything but compound interest, that is not stopping the Pennsylvania Securities Commission (PSC) from unveiling its newest tool to teach students the importance of saving and investing. Save and Invest PA!, an innovative investor education presentation for middle and high school students, is aimed at creating teen investors out of teen spenders by combining the latest investment headlines with creative imagery from today's popular culture to engage teens in financial lessons.
"Now more than ever before, being money smart is essential to succeed in today's environment," said PSC Chairman Bob Lam. "One of the best things you can do for your children or students is to get them to a financial education presentation that not only inspires and excites, but makes them more aware of the benefits of being a smart spender and saver."
The PSC's commitment to investor education dates back to 1989, when the Commission was one of the first regulators in the nation to develop an investor education program devoted to protecting Pennsylvanians from investment fraud through education. "The PSC is always exploring ways to strengthen the financial knowledge of Pennsylvanians of all ages in order to prevent them from becoming victims of financial fraud in the future," said Commissioner Tom Michlovic.
Last April, the PSC received a grant to study what teachers know about saving and investing topics and how comfortable they are teaching about investing. The research revealed that teachers want to teach more about saving and investing but need help in doing so. As a result, the PSC is sending an Investor Education Resource Packet to teachers in the Commonwealth with materials that will enhance their lessons on saving, investing and financial fraud and introduce them to the Save and Invest PA! program. "With the noncommercial 'plain English' resources available today, anyone can become a wiser and safer investor," said PSC Commissioner Steve Irwin. "I encourage every Pennsylvanian to take advantage of the wide variety of quality financial education materials the PSC and others have available to learn about the basics of saving and investing."
With more than a dozen schools in the lineup for April alone, the Save and Invest PA! presentation is free of charge and can be customized to the needs of a particular class.
