Malaysia has been one of the few Asian nations to adopt 'Green' initiatives rapidly into its national programs. One such green initiative is the Green Building mission with an objective to raise awareness and promote sustainable constructions and energy efficient buildings. Green Buildings Index, a professional tool towards more energy efficient and sustainable design and construction of buildings is yet another initiative undertaken.
The congress kick-started with a opening key note address from Y.B. Dato' Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water of Malaysia, who highlighted on the government's role on the Green Building Mission.
Speaker line-up at the congress included senior leadership from Pertubuhan Akitet Malaysia (PAM), Green Building Council of Malaysia, Construction Industry Development Board of Malaysia, Construction Research Institute of Malaysia (CREAM), Nippon Paints, Maleki Gmbh, Lucas Works, Kumpulan Arena, IBS alliance, BDA architects, The Energy Commission, amongst Frost & Sullivan analysts.
"The building and construction industry has a huge role to play in securing a sustainable future. The congress is a huge success as it has brought the entire building industry value chain together. Government and private enterprises need to work very closely to make zero carbon buildings not an exception but a standard. We are deeply honored by the presence of Y.B. Dato' Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water of Malaysia at the congress as it demonstrates that the Government means business. We also appreciate all our sponsors, especially Nippon Paint who have helped to bring this event to fruition," said Satish Lele, vice-president for the Industrial Technologies practice at Frost & Sullivan.
Buildings account for a large percentage of all green house gas emissions and the global energy usage. This concern is fast giving way to designing buildings that are environmental friendly. To address this issue, the afternoon session at the congress was split into multiple tracks like Green Building Design, Smart Energy Buildings and Green Building Materials. The session was interactive with panel discussions and industry case-studies.
Green buildings form an integral part of the environmental sustainability. Highlighting this, Dr Richard Seow, CTO of Nippon SEA Group presented a keynote address at the summit. He also outlined the benefits that organizations could obtain by embracing sustainable building solutions. Nippon Paint, a strong advocate of environmental sustainability and leader in environmentally friendly paint products, has been acknowledged as the preferred paint brand among consumers in Malaysia.
The congress featured the 2010 Frost & Sullivan Green Excellence Award banquet where Malaysian achievers in green excellence were recognized. For more info on the recipients, please visit, http://www.frost-green.com/green_awards.html .
The summit was action-packed and discussed on relevant current topics before ending with a debate on 'Who pays for Green?' – the manufacturers or end customers.

CSR Asia, Holcim, iWINDenergy and TRANE are exhibitors at the congress.
