MANA- A National Latina Organization Disappointed with Department of Education's Gainful Employment Rule
Alma Morales Riojas says Rule Will Hurt Hispanic Students
WASHINGTON, June 2, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In response to the Department of Education's (DoED) release of the 'Gainful Employment' rule, MANA- A National Latina Organization President & CEO Alma Morales Riojas released the following statement:
"After much discussion and debate the Department of Education just released its final Gainful Employment rule. We continue to praise DoED's efforts to improve services to students and their concerted efforts to maximize use of tax dollars. We were optimistic and hopeful that the Department would weigh the highly negative impact of the 'rule' on thousands of Hispanic students attending proprietary colleges.
"However, as it stands, the rule is too broad and will deny students the opportunity to attend proprietary colleges based on an unreasonable loan debt- to-income ratio. I am concerned about the consequences of this ruling for the Hispanic community, as fifty percent of students who attend propriety colleges are minorities and encourage Congress to take action and put an end to the Gainful Employment rule."
