ManattJones Global Strategies Applauds President Obama's Nomination Of Roberta Jacobson As Ambassador To Mexico
WASHINGTON, June 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- ManattJones Global Strategies, LLC, an international consulting firm supporting U.S. companies and investors doing business in Mexico, applauds and fully endorses President Obama's nomination of Assistant Secretary of State Roberta Jacobson as the nation's next ambassador to Mexico.
"Roberta is an outstanding choice to be our next ambassador to Mexico," said Michael C. Camuñez, president and CEO, ManattJones Global Strategies, a former assistant secretary of commerce in the Obama administration who helped lead the administration's commercial engagement with Mexico from 2010 through 2013. "Nobody understands the importance of the strategic relationship between the United States and Mexico better than Roberta, who has spent a significant part of her career working to strengthen bilateral economic, commercial and security ties."
Camuñez, who served as special counsel to President Obama at the White House and helped lead the nominations, vetting and confirmation teams in the first term, worked closely with Jacobson on the creation and launch of the U.S.-Mexico High Level Economic Dialogue in 2013. "This is a very unique moment in U.S.-Mexico relations. The country is undergoing historic reforms that are transforming the Mexican economy and creating significant opportunities for U.S. investment, trade and partnership. Every day, we see other nations moving quickly to deepen ties with Mexico, our second-largest export market and key ally. The U.S. cannot afford to be without an ambassador at this critical time, and I urge the Senate to move forward with her confirmation quickly," Camuñez said.
Former U.S. ambassador to Mexico, James R. Jones, who is the co-founder and chairman of ManattJones, and a member of the U.S.-Mexico CEO Dialogue, said: "Roberta understands the politics, economics, culture and leadership of both countries, which will serve her well as ambassador. At this key time in the relationship between our countries, we need an ambassador with understanding, insight and strong negotiating abilities, and Roberta brings all of these qualities. I first came to know Roberta when she headed the Mexico Desk at the State Department, and she was very attentive to promoting U.S. economic and business interests. In her current position, her responsibilities expanded, but her attention to the special relationship and issues with Mexico never waned."
Jones, who played a critical role in securing the final passage and implementation of NAFTA, continued, "As ambassador, you want someone who will vigorously protect the interests of the United States, but also find common ground to expand our relationship and produce a win for both countries. You also want someone who has a close relationship with the president, and President Obama and his White House team know Roberta and her talents well and have full confidence in her, as we do."
