Manganaro MidAtlantic Provides Their Expertise to the United States Institute of Peace: A Symbol of Unity on International Day of Peace this September 21st

WASHINGTON, Sept. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- September 21^st marks the United Nation's International Day of Peace. Established in 1981 by the United Nations, it is a day that should be "devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples".[1] A symbol of the U.S.'s commitment to the peace-making process is the headquarters of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington D.C. The $186M project owes a great deal to Manganaro MidAtlantic (www.manganaro.com/midatlantic) for making the interior of this iconic structure as striking as the exterior with their highly skilled construction services.

The exterior of the 150,000-square-foot structure combines both traditional and modern elements of architecture. The juxtaposition of the beige, cubic forms of the functioning office space with the two curvaceous, undulating atrium skylights that resemble the wings of a dove piques the interest of the USIP building's visitors and beckons them to venture inside. When entering the atrium, it is immediately noticeable that the majority of offices in the building wrap around a radius within the coinciding space. There are almost no straight walls anywhere in the building, adding to the intrigue, and challenge, of the design. Manganaro met and excelled with these challenges as the principal subcontractor of drywall and acoustics of the mid-Atlantic region.

There were several cases in which Manganaro's accomplished project managers used their expertise to far exceed design specifications. In one instance, several additional coats of plaster were applied to the walls and arching ceiling of the building's auditorium to ensure a flawless finish under highly lit conditions. Another example includes the large, clerestory glass windows that partition each office space. This required Manganaro to construct each partition to be structural, bearing walls that supported the weight of the glass above, while also being self-supporting. Manganaro's work was recognized with a 2010 Craftsmanship Award from the Washington Building Congress and the 2011 Excellence in Construction Award by the Metro Washington and Virginia chapters of Associated Builders and Contractors. The center is an icon of USIP goals, and Manganaro's work is apparent to all who enter the building and exemplifies the company's goal to build best together.
