Manufacturers Directory Reports Rhode Island Industrial Jobs Declined 2.6% Over Past Year
EVANSTON, Ill., Feb. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Industrial employment in Rhode Island declined 2.6% over the past year according to the 2011 Rhode Island Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports Rhode Island lost 1,698 manufacturing jobs and 84 manufacturers between December 2009 and December 2010.
Manufacturers' News reports Rhode Island is now home to 1,908 manufacturers employing 61,298 workers.
"Rhode Island's industrial sectors continue to be affected by the housing bust and the recession," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "However, we're definitely seeing fewer job losses than we did a year ago and the recovery seems to have taken hold."
Bright spots for the state included the recently-announced expansion of submarine-maker Electric Boat in North Kingstown; the planned expansion of Deepwater Wind in Providence; as well as the opening of Tomorrow Biofuels in Cranston and the opening of Parmatech-Proform's metal injection facility in East Providence.
MNI reports fabricated metals manufacturing accounts for the most industrial jobs in the state with 6,164 jobs, down 10.8% over the year. Industrial machinery and equipment ranks second with 6,138 jobs, down 3.1%, while third-ranked instruments/related products accounts for 4,969 jobs, up 5.4% over the twelve-month period.
Industrial sectors that lost jobs over the year included primary metals, down 12%, following layoffs at Stanley-Bostitch, among others. Employment in chemicals manufacturing declined 4.6%; rubber/plastics fell 2.8%; lumber/wood was down 2.7%; furniture/fixtures down 2.4%; and electronics down 1.9%. Employment remained steady in printing/publishing; stone/clay/glass; transportation equipment and textiles/apparel. Gains were seen in food products, up 3.7% and paper products, up 3.1%.
MNI's city data shows Providence remains the state's top city for manufacturing employment, with 8,917 industrial jobs, down 7.3% over the past twelve months. Second-ranked Pawtucket accounts for 7,189 industrial jobs, down 2.8%. Industrial jobs in Cranston declined 6.2%, with the city home to 5,101 jobs. North Kingstown is home to 5,033 jobs, with no significant change reported over the year. Jobs in Warwick also held steady, with the fifth-ranked city home to 4,507 jobs, virtually unchanged from a year ago.
