Maria T. Lymberis, MD, to be Honored with the California Medical Association (CMA) 2014 Gary S. Nye Award for Physician Health and Well-Being

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 5, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Maria T. Lymberis, MD, a member of the Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. (CAP), will be honored with the 2014 Gary S. Nye Award for Physician Health and Well-Being for her longstanding commitment to physician health in her local community and in the state of California, as well as her career-long contributions to medical ethics.  The award will be presented on Friday, December 5, 2014 at the 2014 California Medical Association (CMA) House of Delegates meeting in San Diego, California.

The Gary S. Nye Award for Physician Health and Well-Being is presented by the California Medical Association (CMA) to a member physician who has made significant contributions toward improving physician health and wellness.  This award was established by the CMA House of Delegates in 2009 in recognition of Dr. Nye, who has been a leader in bringing attention to and developing solutions to the issue of physician impairment and rehabilitation.

Dr. Lymberis' career has been defined by her commitment to the development and defense of ethical medical standards.  Dr. Lymberis was involved in the drafting of the California sexual misconduct and patient information law for a California Senate task force and toiled on the issue through the American Psychiatric Association.  She has also worked on issues involving physician health, rehabilitation of physicians, and malpractice prevention.

Dr. Lymberis has been in full-time solo private practice specializing in psychotherapy in Santa Monica, California since 1970.  In addition, for over 25 years she has been involved in psychiatric peer review which includes having served as chair of CAP's Psychiatry Peer Review Committee.

Certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in both psychiatry and child/adolescent psychiatry, Dr. Lymberis is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the Geffen UCLA School of Medicine, and a graduate psychoanalyst of the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute, where she taught for over 20 years as a senior faculty member. She is also a senior expert consultant for the Medical Board of California. Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Lymberis is the founder and president of two nonprofit organizations: Hellenic American Psychiatric Association and The Psychiatric Education and Research Foundation.

CAP takes special pride in the fact that one of its members is receiving this award.
