Here are Mark Ahn's top five lessons on leadership:

1.) Learn from those who came before you. Ideas on the leadership values have remained remarkably stable across generations and even centuries. Lessons gleaned from The Aeneid are just a valuable as those you would learn in any top MBA program. Do not get hung-up on the latest trend or business fad. Good leadership is timeless.

2.) Lead with integrity. According to Mark Ahn's research, integrity-the steadfast adherence to a strict moral or ethical code-is the most important leadership value to businesspeople and managers irrespective of generation. In fact, a lack of integrity dilutes the value of institutions and renders them ineffective.

3.) Exercise good judgment. Good judgment will significantly improve a leader or business' performance. But good judgment requires more than just intelligence; leaders must act with courage and character while remaining flexible enough to adapt to situations as they evolve.

4.) Lead by example. Followers respond best to examples set by the leader. Do not tell your employees; show them. Do not require someone to do something you refuse to do yourself.

5.) Remain humble. Leaders may not always have the best answers and managers often have their pulse of the experience of both the typical employee and customer. Do not be so arrogant that you ignore the important nuggets of wisdom given to you by those you lead. In fact, superior-performing organizations often have humble leaders and find that humility is most important during times of crisis.
