Traditionally, the 4th of July is a big BBQ holiday and with an estimated 80% of American families owning a grill, there will be a lot of shopping dedicated to purchasing food. It's estimated that in the two weeks leading up to the holiday, 190 million pounds of beef is purchased; 700 million pounds of chicken is bought the week of; and, 150 million hotdogs are eaten on the actual holiday - that is a lot of food! Also, going hand-in-hand with the food are the drinks - the 4th of July holiday is the biggest beer selling holiday in the U.S. With beer sales increasing over the past few years, we expect this year to be no different.
The 4th of July holiday is one of the most popular and most expensive weekends to travel. Although gas prices have been declining, the average cost of a domestic flight ticket is still $384. Travelers can expect to pay much more if they are planning on booking last minute flights.
Decorations and Fun
Fireworks can expect big sales this year, too. In 2014, it was estimated that cities spent anywhere between $5,000 and $30,000 to put on a public display of fireworks. Consumers spent $100 on average on fireworks. With different laws and regulations in each state, these amounts will shift depending on where consumers live.
