Marvin Rettenmaier Takes Over the Global Poker Index Top Position
SLIEMA, Malta, January 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Marvin Rettenmaier joins an elite group of live tournament poker players this week by becoming only the fifth person to reach the top of the Global Poker Index (GPI) ranking system. Rettenmaier, a native of Germany, has been playing live tournament poker since 2009. He has been on the Global Poker Index since its debut in July 2011, consistently ranking in the Top 100. Rettenmaier reached the Top 10 in May 2012 and has been working towards GPI#1 since. Rettenmaier had a tremendous amount of success in 2012, including big wins in the WPT World Championship, WPT Merit Cyprus Classic, and the EPT Prague High Roller event all contributing to his rise to the top.
Rettenmaier replaces Dan Smith who had held the GPI Number One spot since October 29th, 2012. In addition to Rettenmaier and Smith, the only other pros who have reached the Global Poker Index Number One ranking are Jason Mercier, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, and Erik Seidel.
This week also sees the introduction of the annual scoring model adjustments for the Global Poker Index. However, those changes did not affect Rettenmaier's move to the top position of the GPI. He would have been the new Number One under both 2012 and the 2013 scoring rules.
In the five months since its acquisition by Zokay Entertainment, the GPI has been solidified as the live tournament poker ranking authority worldwide. Zokay plans to continue developing the GPI as the premiere tool and ranking system for the poker industry, with the expectation of making a significant investment in promoting poker and the GPI across the globe in an effort to establish industry standards for the multi-billion dollar live poker industry. In addition to announcing the winners of the prestigious GPI European Poker Awards on the 22nd of January, expect many more exciting announcements from Zokay Entertainment and the Global Poker Index in the months to come.
