Maryland State Department of Education Selects Blackboard Learn to Replace Existing LMS
Effort Establishes New Statewide Platform for Online Courses & Professional Development
WASHINGTON, Oct. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), one of the highest ranking public school systems in the country, has picked the Blackboard Learn™ platform to replace its current learning management system (LMS) and deliver all state-offered online courses as well as professional development for the state's 60,000 teachers.
All courses available through the Maryland Virtual Learning Opportunities program, a service provided by MSDE that offers online courses for high school credit, will run on Blackboard Learn. MSDE will also offer local educational agencies and districts the opportunity to leverage the environment for blended learning and instructional delivery.
MSDE officials selected Blackboard Learn following a competitive evaluation, finding the system's advanced features ideal to help increase student engagement, collaboration and learning outcomes. The company was also able to offer state officials extended technical support and seamless migration of all legacy courses. This partnership marks the latest in a series of statewide partnerships for Blackboard.
"States are increasingly looking for a common learning platform that will increase user fluency, collaboration across multiple districts, and operational efficiencies," said Brett Frazier, senior vice president of Blackboard K-12. "The Maryland State Department of Education is doing an extraordinary job of expanding learning opportunities for both students and educators. We are excited to help them deliver consistent, high quality, web-based courses and instructional support."
Blackboard has partnered with GoSignMeUp, the leading provider of online class registration and professional development software, to offer MSDE enhanced classroom management and ecommerce tools. The fully integrated software will give Maryland teachers access to various course management functions, such as enrollment statistics, course editing, reports, and transcripts.
Over 2,000 institutions and districts have adopted Blackboard Learn, Release 9.1 to take advantage of the platform's improved stability, social learning tools, digital content integrations and greater workflow efficiencies for teachers and administrators.
