
Mayor AC Wharton & Mayor Mark Luttrell Jr. Come Together to Launch a Memphis Explorer
MEMPHIS, Tenn., May 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A national press conference is being held for Wei Chen and the Wei Around the World Expedition at the Peabody Hotel on Friday, May 20th at 2 P.M. The conference is sponsored by The Peabody Hotel of Memphis.
Mayor AC Wharton and Mayor Mark Luttrell Jr. are showing their support for fellow Memphian, Wei Chen, in his attempt to become the first Chinese Citizen to circumnavigate the globe in a single engine plane.
Wei Chen intends to bring Memphis to the world. Chen, a successful entrepreneur and adventurer, will begin his journey on May 22nd from Memphis after a Gala fundraiser and send off supporting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
"If I can help Memphis and promote Memphis, which is a great city, that's worthwhile to do," Wei said in an interview with The Commercial Appeal on May 3, 2011.
He wants the world to feel the same pride that he does. As a Chinese native, he aims to strengthen East/West relations by being an unofficial ambassador of Memphis.
Wei will spread a message of hope on his journey. Wei has had an outpouring of support in Memphis, including from Memphis Mayor A.C. Wharton and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell Jr., both of whom will be speaking at the press conference.
Notable speakers also include John Moore, President and CEO of the Greater Memphis Chamber; Ken Bennett of Street Ministries; Dean Dayo from the Memphis Music Foundation; a representative from the Alumni Association of the University of Memphis; and Nancy Coffee from The Leadership Academy.
