NEW ORLEANS, March 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A year after its launch, the first dermatologist-driven company dedicated to primary skin cancer protection and prevention introduced its newest solar protection product -- a much-anticipated tinted mineral gel sunscreen – at the 2011 AAD meeting in New Orleans. MD SolarSciences (MDSS) was developed by leading authorities on skin cancer in response to the alarming increase in skin cancers – more than 3.5 million cases diagnosed annually.
Founders Robert J. Friedman, M.D. and Bruce Deitchman, M.D., faced with preventing death from melanoma every day and increasingly uncomfortable with sunscreens available, decided to go beyond the trend of focusing on sunscreens alone. After several years of research, and with the support of prominent medical and scientific professionals who shared their commitment to advancing the science of sun protection, MDSS developed its science-based, ultraviolet radiation (UV) protection system, featuring an array of solar protection products and educational programs.
Its mineral-based and hybrid sunscreens provide broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and eliminate harmful chemicals – making them safer for individuals and the environment. MDSS sunscreens meet FDA guidelines and European COLIPA standards for UVA protection. They contain no-known allergens, such as oxybenzone or octinoxate, are paraben and PABA free and have been included in the Environmental Working Group (EWG) list of top-rated broad spectrum sunscreens.
MDSS sunscreens are efficacious, easy to apply, and feel great on the skin. In addition to the new SPF 30+ tinted gel mineral sunscreen, they include two silky-smooth gels and a moisturizing SPF 40 lotion. The quick-drying SPF 40 no-touch body spray is ideal for all-over body use and the SPF 40 ultra-sport stick is ideal for the face, lips, ears and around the eyes. Sports enthusiasts and active individual particularly enjoy these two products.
The mineral-based gels and lotion use a blend of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which block and reflect UV radiation. The SPF 30+ mineral gel for sensitive skin is an excellent choice for patients with acne and/or rosacea, and for the scalp. Along with the SPF 50+ Ultra Mineral Screen Gel, these mineral screen gels, ideal for post-cosmetic procedures, are in growing demand by plastic surgeons.
Because a combination of broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreens, along with protective clothing, hats and eyewear has been shown to be the best defense against skin cancer and photo-aging, MDSS is expanding its line of UPF 50+ protective clothing and is developing a new line of UV 400 screened protective eyewear.
As part of its educational focus, MDSS sunscreens come packaged with a SolALERT card, a proprietary personal UV detection device. Other educational programs, SolEDUCATE and "Safer Fun in the Sun," are geared to increase knowledge about sun protection. The company's R&D is supported by a scientific advisory council.
