Research & Development partnership to facilitate global expansion of MSC Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Nov. 6, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- MDeC Americas Inc, an entity under the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) tasked with spearheading MDeC's presence in the Americas, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PARC, a Xerox company, to enable MSC Malaysia companies to leverage Silicon Valley's innovative ecosystem to create new or enhanced Intellectual Property (IP).
MDeC Americas Inc. was established to serve as the globalization launch pad for MSC Malaysia as well as enhance the country's digital transformation. The strategic alliance with PARC will facilitate the global footprint expansion of Malaysian MSC-status companies via the creation of a world-class shared R&D program in Silicon Valley. The collaboration will offer MSC Malaysia insights into PARC's key research areas, patents & IP licensing models, as well as opportunities to work with PARC research scientists and officers.
PARC has pioneered many technology platforms -- from the Ethernet and laser printing to the Graphical User Interface (GUI) and ubiquitous computing -- and has enabled the creation of many industries. Today, PARC continues the physical, computer, and social sciences research that enables breakthroughs to help grow our clients' businesses.
Dato' Yasmin Mahmood, CEO of MDeC said, "Innovation is undoubtedly a competitive weapon, and our collaboration with PARC signifies a key milestone in catapulting local MSC Malaysia companies to the global arena by exposing them to world-class R&D and the latest technological breakthroughs. This collaboration provides an opportunity for suitable MSC companies to not only be innovative and work with best-in-class technology scientists, but also find commercialization partners. This strategic partnership is thus very aligned with the aspiration of Digital Malaysia by putting people in the center of technology."
"This strategic partnership will not only provide a platform for our MSC companies to further push their limits and propel them to be global icons, but will also strengthen our goal of becoming the tech hub for the ASEAN region. At the heart of ASEAN, Malaysia is an ideal base to gain a foothold in the region, and a conducive launch pad for digital investors and innovators to capture market share across the region," she continued.
"We believe SE Asian markets have a hunger for technology innovation, fast growing economies, and a business friendly environment," said Aki Ohashi, PARC's Director of Business Development. "We're excited about this partnership with MDeC to bring cutting-edge PARC technologies to Malaysia, and help MSC Malaysia companies expand globally."
"The multi-faceted MDeC Americas-PARC collaboration connects the best of MSC Malaysia's intellectual property with that of Silicon Valley and creates a unique opportunity to spawn new breakthroughs in digital technology that can benefit both ecosystems," said Dato' Dan E Khoo, President of MDeC Americas.
Almost 20 years after the founding of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) in Malaysia, there are today over 3,600 MSC Malaysia companies operating in various parts of the country. Of these, 70% are primarily Malaysian-owned and in various stages of development, with many currently expanding their global footprint.
MDeC Americas, which has been operational since August 2015, aims to drive the global expansion of Malaysia's ICT industry and catalyze the interconnection of Silicon Valley and MSC Malaysia's ecosystems to enhance digital transformation. The office acts as a gateway for high-growth MSC Malaysia companies to penetrate the American and global market, as well as attract Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs) from US-based ICT multinational corporations into MSC Malaysia.

About Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), MSC Malaysia and Digital Malaysia
The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) was incorporated in 1996 to oversee the development of the Malaysian Multimedia Super Corridor (now MSC Malaysia), the platform to nurture the growth of Malaysian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the IT industry whilst attracting participation from global ICT companies to invest in and develop cutting edge digital and creative solutions in Malaysia.
In 2011, MDeC's mandate was broadened by the Prime Minister to include driving Malaysia's transition towards a developed digital economy by 2020 through Digital Malaysia. Digital Malaysia is the national agenda towards a sustainable digital economy built upon a vibrant domestic ICT industry, transformative use of digital solutions by government, businesses and citizens, as well as a robust enabling ecosystem.
Today, both MSC Malaysia and Digital Malaysia run concurrently to spur Malaysia's ICT industry development and digital transformation, under the purview of MDeC.
