WHY: Hundreds of members of the recovery community—individuals recovering from addiction to alcohol and other drugs, their families and supporters—are expected to gather on Thursday, March 31 at 11 am in the State Capitol Rotunda to highlight the reality of long-term recovery from addiction. The effort is led by Minnesota Recovery Connection (MRC), a grassroots, nonprofit organization that serves and strengthens the recovery community by connecting people to the resources that can help them initiate and sustain their recovery. MRC also advocates for recovery by mobilizing and raising awareness of the recovery community in Minnesota.
QUOTES: William Moyers, author of Broken, and Hazelden's VP of Foundation Relations, summed up the spirit of the day when he said, "The recovery community is a constituency of consequence. We are here to highlight the stories of real people in Minnesota who are in long-term recovery from addiction. The Recovery Day on the Hill demonstrates that there are people from all walks of life and all ages who are healthy, productive members of society as a result of their recovery."
Nell Hurley, Executive Director of Minnesota Recovery Connection, said, "It's time we take the focus off the problem of addiction and start focusing on the solution. People recover from this disease every day. We are here to put a real face and a real voice on recovery. Our message is simple: Recovery Works."
