SAO PAULO, Oct. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Last week, The Huffington Post Media Group and Abril Group, one of Brazil's largest media conglomerates announced their partnership and plans for the creation of the Brazilian version of the Huffington Post, a leading source of breaking news, opinion, entertainment, community and digital information. The Huffington Post is not the only media company making noise in Brazil however. This week, Brazilian media giant R7 announced a partnership with Torcedores.com (Portuguese for Fans.com), an online sports publication and publishing platform for Brazilian sports fans.
The partnership was announced Tuesday morning by Antonio Guerreiro, Director of New Media at R7 and Derek Hall, Founder and CEO of Torcedores.com.
Giving regular sports fans the power to express their opinions to a large audience is what caught the attention of R7," says Guerreiro. "The partnership shows that news is no longer only in the hands of whoever is in front of cameras and in the newsrooms. We believe in this model, and are very confident in this partnership."
Torcedores.com was officially launched on September 20th and will cover multiple teams and topics from Brazil and around the globe. In just two weeks, the site has already reached over 130,000 unique visitors and is adding new writers every day.
The model is very similar to Bleacher Report, a sports news site in the U.S. that was purchased last year by Turner Sports for an estimated $200 Million. Link
"We think there is a very big opportunity here in Brazil to change the way that content is created, consumed, and monetized," says Hall, who is American but calls Brazil his second home. "We are taking some of the most innovative new business models from the U.S. and adapting them to Brazil's booming market."
"There are now over 100 million Brazilians online, says Hall, and Brazil is now referred to as "The Social Media Capital of the Universe". With the World Cup and Olympics coming to Brazil soon, we think the timing is just right."
