Medline Awards $150,000 in Breast Cancer Community Grants for Innovative Programs
Six community non-profits win inaugural Medline Breast Cancer Awareness grants for programs and tools promoting early detection, treatment and support
NORTHFIELD, Ill., Oct. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Medline has awarded $150,000 in its inaugural Medline Breast Cancer Awareness grants to six organizations fighting to eradicate breast cancer and providing counseling. The recently launched Medline Community Impact Grant Program for Breast Cancer Awareness drives awareness around prevention and early detection by providing support to organizations on the front lines of patient care.
Communities Big and Small
While the five-year survival rate for breast cancer is 90 percent when detected early, the reality is breast cancer is the second leading cause of death among women in the United States. The six organizations represent the various types of communities Medline serves, from rural towns to big cities, and they work with diverse groups of patients in all stages – from prevention, detection and even grief counseling for families and loved ones.

- Family Health Centers of Southwest Florida, Inc., Fort Myers, Fla.
- Leslie's Week, Arnold, Md.
- Metropolitan Breast Cancer Task Force, Chicago, Ill.
- Susan G. Komen New England, Newton, Mass.
- WVU Foundation, Morgantown, W.Va.
New Ideas in Breast Cancer Awareness
Whether it's driving awareness through Bright Pink's digital risk assessments, or providing art therapy for children whose parents died from breast cancer such as Leslie's Week's Club4Kids program, the six non-profits have plans to utilize their grant dollars in innovative ways. Susan G. Komen New England, which has been helping patients for over 20 years, is using their grant money to develop a Shared Decision Making Tool. The mission is to empower patients to make an educated, informed decision to reduce patient confusion in a complicated healthcare landscape.
Medline and the non-profits will work together to track the progress of these programs and measure impact on the local communities.
