Meemic Foundation Announces Wisconsin Grant Recipients
Company Provides Financial Support to Wisconsin Educators through Foundation Grants
MADISON, Wis., Nov. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Meemic Foundation, a non-profit organization created by Meemic Insurance Company, has been offering financial assistance in the form of grants to schools and educators since 1992. During that time, the Foundation has touched more than 1.5 million students through its financial support of education initiatives. Today, The Meemic Foundation announced that 13 schools across the state have received grants for the Fall 2013 funding period.
"The goal of Meemic Foundation grants is to provide the resources necessary for teachers to create a dynamic learning environment for students," said Pam Harlin, spokesperson for The Meemic Foundation. "Exceptional educators are always looking for new and creative ways to inspire their students. We want to make sure that financial concerns don't stand in the way of those ideas."
Grant applications are evaluated based on a variety of criteria that are provided on The Meemic Foundation website. The Foundation looks to fund innovative programs, events or projects that will significantly enhance students' classroom experiences.
Grants from The Meemic Foundation will be used for a wide variety of purposes. Thomas Jefferson Middle in Madison, Wisconsin will receive $2,182 to enhance their Mission to the Moon program with GPS devices to be used by all 8th graders. Sauk Prairie High will use its $1,537 Meemic grant for its art program to provide Smart Music software for all performing music students to enrich curriculum and allow students to become more independent musicians. At Prince of Peace in Milwaukee, a $2,350 grant will help fund their physical education program by incorporating Health and Nutrition classes and adding heart monitors, pedometers and computer software to track student progress as well as upgrade and fix broken equipment.
According to a recent study conducted by Perry Research Professionals for the National School Supply and Equipment Association (NSSEA), public school teachers in the United States spend more than $1.33 billion out-of-pocket on school supplies and instructional materials. Individual teachers spend an average of $356 of their own money on supplies and resources, including an average of $170 on supplies and $186 on instructional materials.
"It's important to us that teachers and children alike have the best possible tools for learning so that their time in school is not only meaningful and helpful, but motivational, fun and exciting, too," said Harlin.
The 13 receiving schools are eager to put the grants to good use and to get started on enhancing the education experience for their students.
