Meet Ahead: World's Smallest Device That Turns Your Helmet Smart

NEW YORK, May 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Ahead, the wearable that snaps onto any helmet and instantly turns it into a smart helmet, launched on Kickstarter today.

Ahead attaches to your helmet, pairs with your smartphone and lets you listen to music, talk on the phone, get directions, chat with Siri and do a plethora of other smartphone-related activities while keeping your ears open and hands-free.

"Most activities that are inherently dangerous enough to require a helmet are also dangerous enough that you should keep your ears open while doing them," said Marco Park, founder and CEO of Analogue Plus, the company behind Ahead. "I came up with the idea for Ahead while on a ski trip. It was impossible to get my phone out through my layers of padding and too dangerous and difficult to hold it in my gloved hands."

Weighing in at just 65 grams, Ahead snaps securely onto your helmet with one of three included slide brackets. No tools are needed for installation and you can transfer Ahead from one helmet to another.

Ahead uses an oscillator to pass sound directly into your helmet. This works on any helmet – open or closed, padded or thin. The technology is similar to what's used in bone conduction, but instead of passing the vibrations straight into your head, Ahead passes the vibrations into your helmet.

Listening is only one side of the audio equation. Ahead uses two narrow-angle mics that capture sound from just in front of your mouth and run it through a proprietary algorithm. This beam forming technology nearly eliminates ambient and wind noise at up to 60 km/h (40 mph) and transfers your voice to your smartphone crystal clear, regardless of your surrounding environment.

The Analogue Plus team is based in Seoul, and many of the team members previously worked at Samsung Electronics. They were accelerated by C-Lab, which selects entrepreneurs with world-changing ideas from within Samsung. SGNL, another C-Lab incubatee, raised nearly $1.5 million last year on Kickstarter.
