
MEI Healthcare Appoints Board Chairman With International Expertise

Porter, PC., MD, to serve as the chairman of its board of directors. Porter is a radiation-oncologist, businessman and the CEO of McGill University Health Centre in Montreal, one of Canada's largest academic health centers. This non-executive appointment is part of MEI's strategy to expand its service offering internationally.

The Hon. Arthur T. Porter, a member of the Queen's Privy Council and the chair of Canada's Security Intelligence Review Committee, was born in Sierra Leone. He earned his medical degree from Cambridge University, UK, and his MBA from the University of Tennessee. He is a Fellow, with Diplomate status, of the American Academy of Medical Administrators and the past president of the American College of Radiation Oncology. His extensive international experience includes medical practice, business and academic leadership positions in Canada, Europe, Africa and the United States.
The Hon. Arthur T. Porter has also served as a consultant to the World Health Organization and World Bank, and helped establish research and treatment programs in Turkey, India, Yemen, the Gulf Cooperation Council (for the Arab states of the Gulf), the Caribbean, Brazil, Liberia, and throughout Europe. He is the former CEO of the Detroit Medical Center, a USD$1.6 billion health system that is one of the United States' largest urban systems and the largest non-government employer in Detroit; the co-founder of The Cancer Centre, the first state-of-the-art cancer center in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas; and a director of several boards including CancerPartnersUK, Munder Funds and Air Canada.
As the CEO of the McGill University Health Centre, he is leading the organization's CAD$2.25 billion redevelopment project currently under way. A major achievement is the groundbreaking of the CAD$1.343 billion Glen Campus, one of the world's largest and award-winning public-private partnerships to design, build, finance and maintain LEED® silver-accredited pediatric and adult hospitals, a cancer center, and fully-integrated research facilities.
