Mentor Foundation USA and Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy Partner to Offer Mentoring to Area Youth
WASHINGTON, July 19, 2011/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mentor Foundation USA, an international non-profit aimed at empowering youth to make healthy life choices, is partnering with Cesar Chavez Public Charter Schools for Public Policy in Washington D.C. to offer mentoring to students in the 2011-2012 school year.
"We are excited to offer this mentoring program to area youth," says Jamila Sams, Program Director at Mentor Foundation USA. "It's proved to be highly effective in other parts of the world, promoting not just short-term smart choices, but life-long positive outcomes."
The program will be offered at two of the school's campuses: Parkside and Capitol Hill. The students, selected by the school, will be paired with a mentor – a professional from the corporate world. The mentor and mentee will spend about three hours per month together participating in school-based life skills workshops and developing their mentoring relationship.
"The mentoring program will provide our students with a caring adult who will encourage and support their academic achievement and raise their awareness of career opportunities," says Norma Barfield, Chief Development and Marketing Officer of the Chavez Schools.
Ms. Sams agrees. "At times the mentor may serve as a champion, a coach or even an advocate. In addition, the mentor can also provide a glimpse into what is possible in life – guiding, encouraging and empowering the youth to become all that they can be."
Mentor Foundation USA is currently looking for corporate partners for the mentoring program. Corporate partners gain satisfaction from making a real difference in their communities while providing mentors and financial support to the program.
"The program is unique in its approach. It's connecting the corporate world with the world of education for a purpose that is far greater than any other investment a corporation can make," Ms. Sams says. "Because the investment is not just in one child's future, but in the betterment of whole communities."
