NEW YORK, Jan. 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The Merrick Academy of Springfield Gardens, Queens, one of the first Charter Schools to open in New York City, will hold a Community Reception to honor Ilyasah Shabazz, an author and the daughter of the legendary civil-rights leader, Malcolm X, Saturday, January 17, 2015, at 3 PM.
Ms. Shabazz is the third daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz, and is the author of a memoir, "Growing UP X," about her childhood and her views on her father, once a leader of the Nation of Islam who was assassinated February 21, 1965, during a speaking engagement at Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom. Malcolm X was 39 years old, and had split with the NOI leader Elijah Mohammed and resigned his position with the organization, a few years before the assassination.
Ms. Shabazz, who was two years old and was in the ballroom with her mother at the time of the assassination, holds a Master's degree from Fordham University, and in 2007 was an advising scholar in the award-winning PBS documentary "Prince Among Slaves." She has made the pilgrimage to Mecca in 2006, as had her father and mother before her.
The Reception is at the Academy, 136-25 218th St., Springfield Gardens, Queens. The Academy was founded in 2000 as one of the first Charter Schools in New York City and the first Charter School in Queens. It serves nearly 500 students in Kindergarten through Sixth Grade.
