STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
BCC Research's goal in conducting this study was to update the status of the metabolomic market and assess its growth potential over the five-year period from 2015 to 2020. Particularly focus was placed on understanding the current market adoption and analyzing drivers for increasing this in terms of both scope (i.e., more applications) and maturity in terms of user adoption, collaboration with regulators and the emergence of standards.
In addition, BCC Research was interested in understanding the impact of these methods on different research sectors, specifically cancer, toxicology and safety testing; as well as the clinical application of biomarkers in cancer, cardiology, and liver and metabolic disease.
REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY
Metabolomics is a fairly new field relative to genomics and proteomics, which are more mature, but it promises much needed breakthroughs by virtue of being more descriptive of the actual phenotype or working conditions of the human body. Whereas genomics describes the body's code and proteomics the application of that code into
the proteins that do the work, metabolomics describes and measures the resultant interaction of an individual's unique body with those proteins and with the environment.
This report details the recent key technical advances in metabolomic methods, analytical equipment, assay kits, bioinformatics solutions and clinical biomarker applications.
SCOPE OF REPORT
The scope of the report encompasses the major metabolomic technology types that have been used, as well as the major applications being developed by industry, academic researchers and their commercialization offices, and government agencies. It analyzes current market status, examines future market drivers and presents forecasts of growth over the next five years. Technology developments, including the latest trends, are discussed. Other influential factors such as screening strategies for pharmaceuticals have also been included.
