Mexico City-Based Folklórico Company Returns To The Luckman Fine Arts Complex At Cal State LA Oct 19, 20 & 21
Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández: Bringing The Rich Culture of Mexico to the Auditorium Stage and Thrilling Audiences to the Magic of Traditional Mexican Folk Music and Dance
LOS ANGELES, July 10, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State LA presents the return of Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández from October 19 through the 21. Known as "The Cultural Representative of Mexico to the World," the troupe lights up the Luckman Theatre with spirited dances rooted in live traditional folk music that brings together the music, dance, and costume of Mexican folklore from pre-Colombian civilizations through the modern era.
"Because conversion of indigenous peoples was a primary goal during colonization, religious dances were largely eradicated or disassociated from their "pagan" religious elements by missionaries who adapted them to Christian themes," said Rebecca Cantú, writer for ReVista, the Harvard Review of Latin America. "Nevertheless, some dances have survived largely untouched by European influences because indigenous groups in remote regions inaccessible to colonizers continue to practice their traditions."
The company's repertory includes more than 40 ballets of exquisite choreography that pay homage to local dance traditions from some 60 regions of Mexico. They have presented more than 5,000 performances and won more than 200 awards for artistic achievement.
Amalia Hernández founded the Ballet Folklórico de México in 1952, having embarked at a very early age on a never-ending quest to preserve the dancing traditions of her beloved country. More than six decades later, the company is admired as the best of its kind in the world.
Full of movement, rhythm and technical coordination, the company, who have been presenting cultural dance throughout the world for the past six decades, will take audiences on a journey through Mexico's history.
"I believe that the arts are essential for a healthy society to grow and I am committed to providing an accessible and diverse resource for the professional arts to Cal State LA's campus and to our extended community." said Wendy Baker, Executive Director at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State LA.
Tickets are available on Ticketmaster and via the Luckman Box Office at 323-343-6600.
