NEW YORK, Oct. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Bernstein Liebhard LLP is now investigating legal claims related to the recent MicroPort Profemur Modular-Neck Hip Implant recall for thousands of Profemur Long Cobalt Chrome 8 Degree Varus/Valgus Modular Neck components. China-based MicroPort Orthopedics, Inc. announced the voluntary recall in August, after the affected components were associated with an unexpected rate of fractures. On October 2^nd, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) deemed this action a Class I recall, which indicates that the affected components pose a serious risk of injury or death.

MicroPort Profemur Modular-Neck Hip Implant Recall

The Profemur Long Cobalt Chrome 8 Degree Varus/Valgus Modular Neck components affected by this recall are part of MicroPort's Profemur Modular-Neck Hip Implant System. This system consists of interchangeable parts that allow a surgeon to fit the hip implant to each patient's unique anatomy.

According to the FDA, 10,825 Profemur Modular Neck components are being recalled in the U.S. The affected components were distributed from June 15, 2009 to July 31, 2015.  MicroPort has acknowledged receiving 28 reports of implant fractures related to the recalled part, representing a 0.286% rate of fracture. The FDA has advised patients fitted with these components to contact their doctors at once if they experience a sudden onset of severe pain in their post-operative hip, difficulty or inability walking, significant trauma to their hip or leg (e.g. falling), or a tingling sensation or loss of feeling in their leg. Acute fractures of the modular neck may require emergency revision surgery, as such an occurrence has the potential to cause neurovascular damage, hematoma, hemorrhage, and even death.

This is not the first time questions have been raised about the safety of Profemur hip implants. MicroPort began manufacturing the Profemur line in 2013, after it obtained the franchise as part of its acquisition of Wright Medical Group's OrthoRecon business. Prior to the acquisition, Wright Medical had been named a defendant in a number of Profemur hip lawsuits filed on behalf of individuals who allegedly suffered injuries related to the premature failure of Profemur hip replacements.
