Midlandia Press' second novel, Postcards from Pismo, available May 15 Nationwide
BEAVER, Pa., May 14, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Midlandia Press is proud to announce the release of Postcards from Pismo, the second novel by author Michael Scotto, on Tuesday, May 15. The juvenile fiction novel will be available at independent and chain bookstores nationwide, as well as online. This is the seventh title and second novel to be published by Midlandia Press since June 2011.
Postcards from Pismo tells the story of 10-year old Felix Maldonado, who begins a pen-pal relationship with an American soldier serving in Afghanistan as part of a school project. Felix's friendship with the soldier grows more important than ever when Felix's older brother enlists to raise money for college.
Told entirely through Felix's letters, emails, and postcards to the soldier, the novel traces his growth as he grapples with bullies, fear arising from his brother's enlistment, and the meaning of bravery itself.
The novel features beautiful pencil illustrations by Midlandia Press artist Dion Williams.
"We are proud to launch Postcards from Pismo as our latest piece of children's literature. This novel depicts a charming message of friendship and gives an honest account of a young boy's struggle to gain self-confidence and find his place in the world. We are excited to have children experience this story and share in Felix's journey to maturity and self-acceptance," said Kellie Hamilton, Midlandia Press Managing Editor.
"Ever since reading Dear Mr. Henshaw as a boy, I've wanted to try writing a book told in letters. For the longest time, though, I struggled with who my main character should be writing to," said Scotto. "When a member of my extended family was called to serve in Afghanistan, I finally realized who and what my book should be about."
Kirkus Reviews said Postcards from Pismo is "An uncomplicated but fervent and timely show of support." Midwest Book Review said it is "A thoughtful novel with a heartwarming message."
"The writing style is unique and readers are immediately drawn in to Felix's thoughts and emotions related to his family, friends, and experiences in the world at-large," said Hamilton. "The story is relatable and the correlation to the life of a soldier creates a story that is especially relevant and meaningful."
