Milken Institute School of Public Health Launches Health Informatics Degree Program

WASHINGTON, July 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University today announced the launch of an online Master of Science in Management of Health Informatics and Analytics program. Beginning in January 2017, HealthInformatics@GW will develop the next generation of health innovators, who will leverage data analytics and IT-based solutions to improve patient outcomes and the quality of health care delivery in the U.S. and abroad. The new program joins the other GW Public Health Online programs, which include an executive Master of Health Administration and a Master of Public Health.

According to the American Health Information Management Association, health informatics is "poised for a period of rapid growth and expansion as the health care industry continues to evolve and produce an increasing amount of yet-unharnessed data power." Rising career demand in the health informatics field can be largely attributed to Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandates, which now require health care providers to implement electronic health records (EHR) and other technology solutions designed to improve patient care.

"Rising demand in the field can be attributed to the dramatic increase in biological and clinical data, as well as pressure to have better patient outcomes," said Sam Hanna, HealthInformatics@GW program director. "Due to massive systematic changes and government mandates, it is critical, and often mandatory, that health care providers integrate new technologies to increase patient satisfaction and continuously search for new ways to leverage data that will improve public health. This program, tailored for current managers and executives in health care, will teach students to look at health care through a new lens and develop improvements that impact organizational, operational and medical needs for providers and patients alike."

Graduates will acquire the ability to effectively translate data that will improve health care decisions and develop an expertise in areas such as health policy, community health analytics, and health innovation and disruption. They will gain skills in project management, business intelligence, health innovation, predictive analysis and the Internet of Things. Applicants should have a minimum of three years of clinical or administrative experience in the health care sector and be currently employed in the health care industry.

HealthInformatics@GW will be delivered through live, face-to-face online classes, immersive experiences and an interactive social technology network that allows students to access course content from any location with an internet connection.
