LOS ANGELES, June 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- This month, Milocon Corporation, the pre-eminent non-structural earthquake safety company, introduced the Seismolatch, a cabinet latch that remains inactive until triggered by the movement of an earthquake. Rated as a Top 5 Safety Innovation by Eureka Ranch, the Seismolatch garnered an international following in its first week on the market.

Milocon's President, 30 year aerospace and manufacturing veteran Wayne Hartford, invented the Seismolatch after his family experienced two major earthquakes and countless smaller ones in Southern California. Finding the cabinet latches he'd used to be sorely inadequate, he set out to create a latch that would provide better earthquake protection without hindering daily cabinet use.
Aside from superior earthquake performance, Hartford believes consumers using the Seismolatch will appreciate not having to unhook and re-hook the latch every time they open a cupboard. Cabinet latches that were designed for child safety are no longer the only choice people have for earthquake preparedness and because of its ease of use, the Seismolatch is ideal for the elderly and those with arthritis or other disabilities.
In regards to other latches used for earthquake protection, Milocon's VP of Operations, Wendy Hartford says, "Many people refuse to secure their cabinets because the inconvenience or inability to use their current latches outweighs the safety features. That leaves people with no protection when an earthquake strikes. Seismolatch was designed for maximum earthquake protection without inhibiting normal cabinet use."
The Seismolatch is easy to install and requires no measuring or marking. The latches are made of stainless steel and aircraft-grade aluminum and can withstand pressure up to 50 pounds, 6 times the load of other cabinet latches. Once the latch is triggered, cabinet doors only open far enough to slip in a finger to release the latch. Latches are available in three attractive finishes and are available on the company's website, www.seismolatch.com.
