LONDON, July 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Report presents summary of the reimbursement situation in Europe for all developed or currently under development minimally invasive (transapical approach via mini-thoracotomy) and transcatheter mitral valve repair and replacement procedures for mitral regurgitation. Information for this research was obtained from publicly available sources provided by national authorities who maintain procedural classifications, develop national payment systems, and determine coverage policies in health care (including health technology assessment bodies). No payer interviews were performed with the exception of requests to authorities when clarifications about procedure coding or reimbursement status were required.

Reimbursement for the emerging group of minimally invasive (transapical and transcatheter) mitral valve repair and replacement technologies has not yet been established in a majority of European countries. While procedure coding does exist in some locations, it is based primarily on nonspecific codes. Moreover, there is limited acceptance by payers to date.

Germany is leading the way in establishing specific coding and reimbursement for a range of emerging mitral valve repair and replacement technologies.
