OAKLAND, Calif., Dec. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- City workers represented by SEIU Local 1021, with the solidarity of IBEW 1245 workers, will announce an unfair labor practice strike, while IFPTE Local 21 plans a sympathy strike.
At issue in these negotiations are unfair labor practices, understaffed departments, vacancy and retention problems, health and safety issues for the community caused by mandatory overtime for emergency dispatchers, and an increasing reliance on temporary part time employees to service the growing city.
WHO: Oakland City workers, from all City departments and positions, represented by Service Employees International Union Local (SEIU) 1021, International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) Local 21 have voted to strike on December 5th, 2017.
SEIU 1021 and Local 21 spokespeople will be available throughout the day while strike preparations take place, open to the media.
WHAT: City of Oakland Union workers will announce their intent to strike and highlight the city's unfair labor practices, workplace conditions, understaffing levels, cost of living concerns, and the risks posed to the community by illegal dumping and staffing levels that are inadequate to provided needed services, all of which led to this decision.
The City of Oakland has been in contract negotiations with SEIU Local 1021, IFPTE Local 21, and IBEW 1245 for more than seven months. More than 3,000 workers have been operating without contracts in that time.
