Morningstar Announces Annual Indexes Market Classification Review
CHICAGO, Oct. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Morningstar, Inc. (NASDAQ: MORN), a leading provider of independent investment research, today announced its annual Morningstar Indexes market classification review. The Morningstar Index Committee is making two changes to the emerging markets category. Effective at the June 2016 semiannual reconstitution, Morningstar will reclassify Greece from the developed category to emerging markets and Morocco from the emerging markets category to frontier market.
"Greece continues to experience political and economic instability, which poses significant risks to investors. In light of the uncertainty surrounding its future, Greece no longer meets the requirement of a developed market," Sanjay Arya, head of Morningstar Indexes, said. "The Moroccan equity market has seen a substantial drop in liquidity in the past few years and fails to meet the minimum liquidity standards that currently prevail in the emerging markets category."
Morningstar will continue to classify South Korea as an emerging market because it fails to meet international investors' accessibility requirements. The Committee will also continue to exclude China A-Shares from the emerging markets category due to restrictions on cross-border capital flows. The Morningstar Index Committee will continue to monitor the following countries for possible reclassification: China, Pakistan, Peru, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea.
