NORRISTOWN, Pa., Sept. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Due to wet weather, the Department of Environmental Protection has canceled treatments to control adult mosquito populations in portions of Abington and Cheltenham townships, Montgomery County, that were scheduled for today and Tuesday, Sept. 7.
DEP and the Montgomery County Health Department will continue to perform surveillance to detect populations of adult nuisance mosquitoes in these and other areas of the county.
Certain mosquito species carry the West Nile virus, which can cause humans to contract West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all residents in areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of contracting West Nile encephalitis.
Mosquito samples in 55 counties have been identified with the West Nile virus so far this year. The Department of Health reported Pennsylvania's first probable human case Aug. 30.
