ATLANTA, Nov. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- At the 2011 SCTE Cable Tec-Expo,  Motorola Mobility, Inc. (NYSE: MMI) is showcasing several new strategies that empower operators to preserve existing investments, meet new consumer demands, and converge data and video delivery for greater resource efficiency.

Huge consumer hunger to enjoy compelling content and emotional connections across multiple devices/networks has created a host of new operator challenges and opportunities. The popularity of new cable TV and Internet services – particularly Internet video – has dramatically transformed the requirements for cable networks and infrastructure. Devices are getting smarter and more connected, empowering a lot of new compelling consumer experiences. The increase of connected products and competitive services will be a catalyst for moving cable operators deeper into the home, helping to fulfill this consumer hunger.

"We're redefining every element of the Home ecosystem – from broadband delivery into the home to content streaming into the consumer's device – delivering the best, most intuitive converged experiences that make people's lives better," said Dan Moloney, president, Motorola Mobility . "At the 2011 SCTE Cable Tec-Expo, Motorola is showcasing its newest strategies for extending the life and value of today's systems. These new technologies are another example of how we are empowering our customers to deliver more through our end-to-end portfolio, technical expertise, and industry-leading software solutions."

CCAP AND THE SHIFT TO IP

Consumers want more compelling video content and connectivity across all of their devices and networks. This increasing hunger has created accelerating demand for more video and data capacity. To meet these needs, the cable industry is focused on driving greater density through the network, while also exploring the potential of a future Cable Converged Access Platform (CCAP).

Because most operators agree that CCAP migration will take place on a phased deployment model, hybrid networks will be the norm over the next several years. Operators are faced with balancing investments in legacy technology and future-serving IP-based systems.  As a result, Motorola has invested heavily in both the evolving CCAP platform and its legacy CMTS technology.

The Motorola product roadmap is designed with CCAP in mind, and as operators start looking to bond more than eight downstream channels (need to deliver more than 8 downstream channels per serving group) at a time, Motorola will help customers target appropriate headends in high-demand regions for a CCAP migration.

APEX3000

Consumers can't get enough on-demand content. Substantial VOD growth and new network-based DVR trials have increased delivery needs for narrowcast video. Today, Motorola has introduced the Motorola APEX3000 to meet this growing demand.

The APEX3000 Universal Edge QAM (U-EQAM) offers market-leading density. Motorola Mobility is leading the industry discussion on how today's high-density U-EQAM solutions will migrate towards a CCAP architecture. The APEX3000 offers 8x the density supporting 384 QAM channels per RU or a total of 1536 QAM channels per 4 RU chassis versus our lower density APEX1500 solution

  • Two APEX3000s can replace two entire racks in the hub of previous generation EQAM solutions
  • Saving 20RUs, 280 cable runs, 26MWh electricity saved annually
  • The APEX3000 reduces power per QAM by 72% (<1W per QAM at maximum density)
  • Features 12 10GigE ports – eight primary ports and four back-up – empowering operators to ingest enough content to fill every QAM channel with unique narrowcast content

TXPlus

Consumer demand for both OTT and managed IP video is increasing bandwidth requirements by 40-60 percent per year. Motorola continues to steadily increase channel density, to help operators keep up with the explosion of video on the Web and new consumer demands.

Today, it sets another new standard with the TXPlus software upgrade for Motorola's TX32 decoupled downstream module. With its 2008 launch, the TX32 dramatically (500%) increased downstream bandwidth capacity of the BSR 64000, enabling operators to add capacity while protecting their original CMTS investment. The TXPlus upgrade offers operators the ability to double (100%) the downstream capacity of their existing BSR 64000 CMTS: DOCSIS 3.0 cards (64 channels), achieving 384 DS channels per chassis, and it increases EuroDOCSIS 2.0 downstream cards by 50 percent (48 channels), reaching 288 DS channels per chassis – all without having to replace CMTS cards. (there will be network disruption as a software upgrade is required.).

Modular HUB (MOTr)

Motorola announces the availability of the new MOTr modular Hub. The MOTr provides operators with a singular flexible hub that can eliminate the need for physical brick and morter Hub facilities. Motorola understands the system requirements for a modular hub and has developed simplified designs to speed operator time to market and keep network costs minimized.

Motorola's new Modular-HUB (MOTr) helps operators move fiber deeper into their systems while reducing physical hub locations. It provides a versatile hub replacement solution, in a simplified full spectrum, or legacy broadcast/narrowcast implementations. It also reduces expensive, environmentally controlled brick-and-mortar locations with solutions that span greater than 100km.The MOTr enables operators to achieve distributed network segmentation, balance passive losses, and add additional capabilities such as RFoG, Ethernet aggregation, and traditional HFC node functions.

Gamma Stream Portfolio – Multi-Wavelength Transport Solutions

Motorola's new suite of multi-wavelength transmitters  allow operators to further minimize segmentation costs by conserving fiber  while providing best in class performance at every price point, for all digital and analog/digital systems. The solutions maximize existing network capacity while also driving advancements for tomorrow's bandwidth needs.

Nextgen Digital Return System

Motorola's new next-generation 85MHz digital return system provides the most flexible and highest performance 85MHz capable digital return available. This future proof digital return allows operators to protect their investment in digital return with a DOCSIS 3.0 compliant, 256QAM capable solution.

  • Operators can deploy Motorola's digital return cost effectively today at any split, while allowing capacity to go up as high as 85MHz in the future with no reconfiguration. This provides significant additional capacity to existing 42 MHz return path for DOCSIS and 65 MHz return path for EuroDOCSIS systems.
  • Top performance providing high dynamic range via Motorola's innovative companding.
  • The flexibility of SFP based design further simplifies operator flexibility in selecting CWDM, DWDM and 1310 all with the same host transmitter.

TV BEYOND THE TV

Less than two years ago, the tablet was introduced – and it forever changed consumer expectation for video. Motorola's Televation™ live streaming device is uniquely designed to securely deliver live TV to tablets anywhere around the home, without taxing network bandwidth. Its June 2011 introduction generated widespread industry interest -- as well as a number of awards.

Motorola Televation™ Hosted App

Motorola's long-standing, collaborative partnerships with cable operators mean it knows what they need and can deliver a cost-effective, deployable solution when they need it. Today, Motorola has introduced a new hosted client Televation app – the next evolution in its Televation platform. This hosted app streamlines set-up costs and time-to-market, making it an ideal solution for small-to-mid-size operators looking to satisfy consumer hunger for TV Beyond the TV today, but not ready to invest in expensive, custom applications.

  • Hosted Televation app offers an affordable way to provide TV beyond the TV today…at an accessible price point.
  • Solution includes UI, log capture, and code download servers. Its flexibility enables small-to-mid-size operators to support their Televation units in the same way they support their existing base of set-tops.
  • Use of a QAM tuner and CableCard for decoding and decrypting means no costly infrastructure upgrades or use of premium DOCSIS bandwidth.

Motorola DCX3600 Advanced Video Gateway

Motorola is also showcasing its DCX3600 home gateway, which provides an entertainment hub for the evolution of TV and video content-sharing in the home. The Motorola DCX3600 gives operators greater efficiency, flexibility and control, so they can blend broadcast and IP-delivered content and offer multi-screen video experiences today – with minimal impact to the existing service delivery infrastructure or in-home wiring.

The DCX3600, along with Motorola Televation, is being honored today at SCTE as an elite scoring product in the 2011 Broadband Technology Reviews. Motorola's DCX3600 and Televation received top industry scores by a panel of leading cable engineering experts.

CONNECTED HOME SERVICES

It has been talked about for years ...

Now, is the right time to deliver the connected home. People are becoming more networked – and they want to see what matters to them on the screens that matter to them. Operators have the opportunity to become the gateway to a personalized, connected home experience for consumers…anytime, anywhere. But, with more connected devices in the home than ever before, they need smarter solutions to make them work together, simply and easily.

Motorola 4Home

Home Monitoring/Control and Energy Management applications present a significant growth opportunity for operators. For example, knowing which appliances are consuming the most electricity is an idea highly appealing to many US broadband households.

At SCTE, Motorola is showcasing its new 4Home Software Platform for Cable. Motorola 4Home works with services across the digital home to make sure that real people can use their connected devices in new ways that save them time, energy, and money. This is the connected home, delivered.

  • Motorola 4Home software platform for Cable represents the ultimate in flexibility and future-readiness for connected home deployments.
  • Open-standards and device-agnostic design enable it to support the full range of disparate devices commonly found in connected homes—no need to upgrade or replace expensive hardware when new technologies or products enter the market.
  • The same flexible design lets operators scale their portfolios to include new services seamlessly, without truckrolls.
  • Complementary API and SDK components enable customizable service offerings to best serve business needs.

CUSTOMER WINS

Motorola enjoys long-standing, collaborative partnerships with cable operators and service providers globally. The company recently announced the following customer wins:
